202 South Union Street
Olean, NY  14760
The St. Joseph Altar, located interiorly on the west side of the Basilica, has a unique side altar window as well as a statue of St. Joseph.

The St. Joseph Altar has a unique Munich-style stained-glass window that is 8 feet wide and 12 feet high that depicts the Dream of St. Joseph (with the Annunciation depicted in a cloud). The St. Joseph statue (4 feet high) is made of Carrara marble.  The statue is flanked by Carrara statues of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Anthony of Padua (each 3 feet high) honoring the Franciscan heritage of this parish community.  Thomas Merton, author of The Seven Storey Mountain, was known to come and pray at this St. Joseph Altar. In addition, the altar area contains the original baptismal font used to baptize Louis Zamparini.  Zamparini was a World War II hero and 1936 Olympian. His life was depicted in the movie, Unbroken.

In addition, there is an extra Shrine to St. Joseph located in the back of the Basilica. For more information, go to smaolean.org.
